Friend of the Poor: Mary Aikenhead is a book by Rosaleen Crossan RSC looking at the life of this extraordinary Cork woman who founded The Religious Sisters of Charity. It traces her life and inspiration. Born into incredible wealth and privilege, she decided to abandon all of that and dedicate her life to serving the poor.
Last year was the bi-centenary of the foundation of the Religious Sisters of Charity, and on 18 March 2015 their founder Mary Aikenhead was declared Venerable by Pope Francis.
In this book, Rosaleen reveals how this nineteenth century woman’s extraordinary faith in God and her total dedication to service of the poor has placed her firmly on the path towards Sainthood.
The book will be launched in St Mary’s Day Centre in Donnybrook on Nov 21st. it is published by Columba Press and is available for sale in all good book shops and online at Columba.ie
