Disappointing Budget

Social Justice Ireland, a think tank that looks at the implications of the budget said that the most vulnerable were betrayed by the budget, with the poorest 30 per cent being hit hardest, particularly with rising food costs.

The pointed out that while TDs will see their salaries rise by €1,600, many of the most vulnerable will see their welfare payments unchanged. They were particularly disappointed that there was no increase in core welfare rates and that a recommended 30c increase in the national minimum wage – to €10.10 an hour had been shelved pending Brexit.

Miriam Gormally spoke with Michelle Murphy who outlined how much more was needed also in the area of environmental initiatives.
